Chapter 1, Your Appearance (English Version)

“Go! Charlene, go!” It’s the same situation every week at Hua Da High School. Boys could be seen crowding outside the hall every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, making a hell lot of noises.

The reason why the boys are crowded there every week is because of Charlene Hsu. She is the leader of the badminton team in Hua Da. Charlene is an extraordinary high school girl with amazing looks and outstanding skills and brains. She was known to single-handedly defeat the whole badminton team when she was in her first year and she topped her level in examinations every year. It’s a no wonder she managed to get half the school running after her with no effort at all.

“Hey Charlene, your die-hard fans are here again,” Kelly Yang, Charlene’s junior, called out.
Kelly is pale and skinny with long silky brown hair. She is only five feet tall, but posses great badminton skills.

“For God’s sake, they’re here again! They’re noisy and irritating and they’re getting on my nerves! Look, I bloody missed the ball again.” Lynn complained.

Lynn Ye is in the same year as Charlene. She is about five feet five, and Lynn’s the most careless person you could ever meet. If you look closely, you could spot a few patches of red in the midst of her shoulder length ebony hair. It must have slipped her mind to dye it back to black when the holidays ended.

“Why are you so worried? It’s not like they’re here to see you play.”Kelly raised her brows in amusement.

“But the point is, they’re here! It gives me the creeps and makes me jittery to see so many guys here!”Lynn shivered and wiped a drop of sweat off her forehead.

Kelly snorted, “You’re worried sick because of that? For God’s sake they’re here to see Charlene, not you! You’re such a weak player plus you’ve got no looks! Why in the hell would they even look at you?”

“Kelly Yang, just because you’re close to Charlene doesn’t gives you the right to throw your weight around. After all, I’m still your senior.”Lynn fumed.

Kelly rolled her eyes.

“If I didn’t know better, I’ll say you are the one throwing your weight around, Lynn. If you want your juniors to respect you, you have to show them what you’ve got. But too bad Kelly is way better than you in all aspects. That gives her the right to criticize you isn’t it?”Charlene’s best friend, Alena said.

Alena is tall (five feet three) with long black hair. She has an ordinary girl-next-door look, so no one really paid her any attention, and she seems to be quite bitter about it, seeing that she has Charlene for a best friend.

“You’re as bad yourself, isn’t it, Alena?”Lynn’s good friend, Jessica strutted over proudly.

Jessica is the best player on the team after Charlene. She posses good looks, good brains, great skills and an even greater self esteem. She is always strutting around arrogantly, looking down at everyone except for Charlene, who she admitted is better than her. And that’s probably why Jessica hates Charlene the so much.

“Well, at least I’m still better than she is.”Alena answered, glancing at Lynn.

Kelly giggleld, whereas Lynn started, “You…!”

Jessica and Alena looked as if they’re ready to pounce on each other.

“Girls, stop arguing.”Charlene said as she stepped in between Jessica and Alena.

Indeed, when compared to Charlene, the other girls seem a shade duller. Charlene is five foot three with big bright eyes and long lashes. There seems to be an aura of confidence, independence and outstanding leadership around her. As such, the other girls quieted down when she spoke. Jessica and Alena finally turned away from each other, Jessica back to her gang and Alena stood behind Charlene.

“There’s no point in arguing about something so minor. Alena, Kelly, we must remember that there’s always some out there who is better and more skillful than us, so we shouldn’t look down on others. And Lynn, you shouldn’t even bother about those guys outside. You might as well use that extra energy on training instead.” Charlene chided as she pulled her long brown hair back into a ponytail.

“Precisely! If Charlene’s not bothered, I can’t see why you are.” Alena chimed in.

Lynn blinked, and Jessica retorted, “Oh yeah? I myself can’t see why you aren’t bothered. If I remembered correctly, some of those guys outside are your ex-boyfriends right? All thanks to you, they met Charlene and went running after her instead.”

“I’m not bothered!”Alena said shrilly.

Jessica’s lip curled into a smirk at her words.

“Stop it.”Charlene said coldly, “The biggest problem with you guys is that you don’t know your own limitations. You’re so proud that you can’t concentrate on improving yourselves, and that is precisely why we’re always losing to You Yang High. If you’re unable to divert your attention to training yourselves up, I guess we should just surrender the match this year.”

Charlene is known to be foolishly loyal to friends, and Jessica just crossed the line.

“As your leader, I hope to see you improving your skills and I have the responsibility to see you all do so. A strong player with weak concentration and negative attitude isn’t going to win us the match. Your attitude is the most important strait in here. If you’re unhappy with the rules, you can leave. I rather have all the weak players with positive attitude than strong players with the opposite.”

Charlene’s words were mostly directed at Jessica.

Jessica, arrogant and proud, isn’t going take this lying down.

“Hey, you don’t have to say those things right? So what if you’re our leader? It’s no big deal and it doesn’t give you the right to step on us.”

“Yeah, we have feelings too, you know!” Jessica’s best friend, Germaine said boldly. It could be define as bold because usually only Jessica stands up to Charlene when she is speaking.

From young, Germaine had been following Jessica around a lot; hence she had become as proud as she is. Germaine is one of the few who actually wore spectacles on the team. She has short brown hair and a plain look. However, she is the brainy one in the gang and it was her who keeps stopping Lynn from blowing Jessica up.

“Yeah! You should be held responsible for these guys anyway!” Lynn chipped in.

“It’s not her fault that they keep sticking to her like bees to honey!”Kelly argued.

“Are you girls done with your squabbling? If you are, get back to practice!” As they squabbled, the girls didn’t realize their coach approaching.

“Coach.”Everybody stopped their arguments at once.

“Where’s your unity? Without effort at all from the opposition team, you guys fell like peas out of a bottle. Charlene’s right! A player with weak determination, concentration and bad attitude can leave! I rather have the weak players with the opposite!” Coach barked.

“I want a few laps from you girls before training ends! Go!”

The girls parted solemnly.

“Charlene.” Coach called out.

Charlene stopped in her tracks and look up.

“Meet me in my office after training. You can forget the laps. I need a word.” Coach said, and left.

Jessica and her gang threw Charlene a dirty look before dispersing from the crowd. Alena and Kelly made a face at them in response.

-***********************************************-

“Coach?”Charlene knocked on the office door.

“Come in.”

Charlene opened the door guiltily. She had failed him in keeping the team united.

Coach was bending over a pile of paperwork behind his desk, “Sit.”

Charlene sat down, “I’m sorry Coach. I have gone overboard. I will apologize to them.”

Coach looked up from his work. He blinked at Charlene.

“Coach?”Charlene said uncertainly.

“It’s warming to know you are so mature. I agree you’re pretty rash just now. But this is not why I asked you to meet me here.”

“You didn’t ask me here to speak about this?”Charlene said, relieved and surprised.

“Nope,” Coach smiled. “I asked you here to talk about the upcoming match.”

“The upcoming match?”

“As you know, the annual badminton competitions are only a few months away, but look at the state of our players. Other than you, Jessica and Kelly, the rest of them are too much under national standard. We are not going to win this year if they’re still like that. And that is why I asked you here. I need your help in training them. I hope to see improvement at least in Alena and Germaine.”

“But, Coach… Three months is not…”Charlene begins.

“I have faith in you.”Coach answered before Charlene could finish.

On the other side, Alena had rushed into the shower room before the others so she could take a shower and cool off before it gets too crowded.

“Drat the dratted Charlene Hsu. Who the heck does she think she is? Throwing her weight around and acting as is she’s the best player around…”Jessica’s bitter voice travelled to Alena’s ears.

In the shower cubicle, Alena straightened up to listen with all her might.

“Forget it Jess, she is the best player around school.” Lynn said in a small voice.

“So you’re on her side too, huh?”Jessica snarled at her.

“Shut up, Lynn.”Germaine, noticing the look on Jessica’s face, added when Lynn opened her mouth to retort.

Lynn heeded the advice at once.

“Okay, anybody got any idea how we could get back at Charlene?”Germaine asked, changing the subject.

“Well, I have. But it’ll only work if the whole team cooperates.” Jessica said, as-a-matter-of-factly.

Whatever the idea was, it attracted the attention of the other members immediately. They crowd around Jessica and talk in voices so low that Alena have to strain her neck to catch what they are saying.

“Have you really?”

“What is it?”

The girls in the shower room are not exactly Charlene’s fans. They nursed a grudge against Charlene ever since the first day of school, whether it is because she was multi-talented or because of the fact that she could take away any guy’s heart with no effort at all.

“Let us hear it.”Germaine’s voice practically shook with excitement.

Even from the cubicle, Alena could imagine Jessica’s triumph look.

“As the captain and the leader, she has the responsibility to what is it? Oh, oversee us training hard to improve our skills. I believed it would irritate her greatly if the team do not cooperate.”

Lynn rolled her eyes at Jessica, “I thought it would be some great idea.”

“Yeah, this sounds like a very common thing to do.” One of the girls said in a disappointed voice.

“Well, I don’t see you both doing it.” Jessica snapped.

They shut up immediately. Jessica is not to be tested in this irritable mood.

“Anyway, as I was saying, it won’t work if it’s just you or me. We need the whole team’s cooperation.” Jessica continued as if there is no interruption, “Well, almost all I mean, seeing that some people don’t think much of it.”

With that, she threw a disgusted look at Lynn and companion.

“And when the whole team don’t cooperate, Coach will be forced to change leaders…”Germaine said slowly, finally getting the idea.

The others caught on too. Excited whispers broke out and Alena heard one that said, “Great idea, Jess!”

“If Coach really changed captains, who would he choose?” Someone asked.

“It’s obvious, isn’t it?”Germaine said, exasperated, “I mean, the best player after Charlene is Jess!”

“Hang on, what about Kelly?”Lynn asked.

“She’s a year younger, and with us seniors around, she won’t even stand a chance. Plus, she’s wayyyy behind in terms of leadership skills.”Germaine reasoned, emphasizing on the word ‘way’.

The others nodded their agreement, Jessica’s face lighted up in pure arrogance.

“And Alena?”Lynn asked again.

Germaine rolled her eyes, “Oh please, Alena Chen? Pig can fly before she gets the chance to become leader. So would you be so kind as to keep your mouth shut for a moment?”

“I was just suggesting it!” Lynn exclaimed in a hurt voice.

“Well, if some people insist on going against me, I won’t stop them from joining the Charlene fans club, not that she needs any more members seeing that it’s such a big organization already.”Jessica announced menacingly, half glancing towards Lynn.

Lynn looked as if she was about to retort, but someone whispered, “Drop it, Lynn,” and she closed her mouth, looking away bitterly.

“Yeah, Alena’s skill is nowhere near Charlene’s. I really don’t understand how they became the best of friends.” Someone wondered out loud.

Many nodded.

It is a mystery how Charlene and Alena became friends. They are so extremely different that it would seem impossible that they can come together without having conflicts. Yet, the two are as close as anybody can imagine.

Charlene is clever, sporty and outspoken. She tries her best in everything and is determined to come top in everything she does. Alena on the other hand hides her motives and beats around the bush every time she wanted something. Alena only do things that benefit her and she is never as determined or clever as Charlene. Alena also keeps a wardrobe full of horror movies. Charlene absolutely hated those.

“Well, who cares? It’s none of our business anyway. I think we’d better go soon, it’s getting dark outside.” One of the girls said suddenly.

“Yeah, I guess we better. They’re closing the school soon.”

Jessica and gang finally left the shower room. Alena hastily got dressed and hurry off to find Charlene.

In her haste, she did not check where she was heading, and on the landing outside the Coach’s office, she ran head first into someone. The collision was so great that both landed heavily on the floor.

At that precise moment, Charlene opened the door to the Coach’s office, and the first thing she saw was Alena lying on top of a guy she had never met before.

“Hey!”

Alena and the guy look up at Charlene in surprised. They had momentarily forgotten what had happened. They scrambled hastily to their feet, looking embarrassed.

“I’m sorry!”Alena apologized frantically, “I’m really sorry!”

Charlene pulled Alena aside before the guy could open his mouth, “Don’t apologize! He should be the one doing that! What the heck are you trying to do?”

The last sentence was directed at the guy.

“What am I trying to do?”The guy asked, puzzled.

“You’re hugging her!”Charlene exclaimed.

“Me?!” He looked torn between amusement and amazement now.

“Charlene, you got it all wrong! He’s not hugging me. I bumped into him, and we fell. That’s all to it, really.”Alena blushed. Gosh, he’s hot.

“Alena! He’s trying to… touch you! Aren’t you, aren’t you angry about it?” Charlene asked, exasperated.

Alena is gazing dreamily at the guy. Charlene’s words went unheard.

Charlene rounded upon him this time, “If you think that you can get away doing that again to Alena just because she’s innocent, you’re wrong! You pervert!”

“You’re really stubborn. Or aren’t you listening? Your friend here told you that it was she that bumped into me, not I went running to what, touch her.”

“He’s right, Charlene. I heard Jessica’s plans to get back at you, so I rushed to tell you about it, and well, I ran into him. It was lucky it’s him though. I could be really hurt if he didn’t cushion my fall.” Alena blushed deeper at this, “I’m really sorry about this.”

“Alena!”

“Not a problem. Be careful next time. Or I’ll pity the other guy who is labeled ‘pervert’ next.” He glanced at Charlene.

Charlene stared at the guy while Alena smiled.

“I’m Alena. You?”

“Aaron. Aaron Ng.”

“This is Charlene.” Alena gestured at Charlene.

Charlene merely looked away.

Aaron squinted at her, “You’re that famous Charlene Hsu? I heard about you from some guys back there. They seem to worship you a lot. But I’ve got to say they got bad taste.”

“Bad taste?! You’re not any better are you?” Charlene fumed.

“Charlene!” Alena grabbed hold of Charlene before the latter could pounce on Aaron, though Alena had difficulties hiding her glee. Nobody had ever said Charlene was ‘a bad taste’ before.

“Don’t stop me.”Charlene whispered through gritted teeth.

Alena smiled apologetically to Aaron.

“If I were you, I would watch my back.” Charlene warned him.

“Really?” Far from looking solemn or worried, Aaron looked positively gleeful, “Thanks for your ‘concern’ then.”

“You!”

“I gotta run soon. See you around Alena. Bye Iron Beak.” Aaron added, grinning at Charlene.

“What?!”

Aaron grinned down at her, and as he leaves, he felt that maybe life in Hua Da won’t be so bad after all…

“He’s hot…” Alena sighed happily.

“Hot? I bet he’s not!” Charlene mumbled furiously.
